Kedarnath Tour Package from Kolkata

5 Nights Days 6
1

The Kedarnath Tour Package from Kolkata is a complete 6 Days / 5 Nights sacred pilgrimage to Kedarnath Temple — one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the most spiritually powerful shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, situated at 3,583 metres above sea level in the Rudraprayag district.

This pilgrimage package is specially designed for Bengali devotees and pilgrims travelling from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport Kolkata or Howrah Railway Station, with complete end-to-end travel coordination managed by SnazzyTrips.

Kedarnath is not an ordinary temple. It is the highest Jyotirlinga in India — an ancient stone temple of Lord Shiva standing for more than 1,200 years beneath the towering Kedarnath and Kedar Dome peaks, at the origin of the sacred Mandakini River.

The temple is accessible either through the famous 16 km mountain trek from Gaurikund or by helicopter service from Phata or Sersi helipad. Kedarnath gained even greater spiritual significance after surviving the devastating 2013 floods that destroyed much of the surrounding region.

For Kolkata and West Bengal travellers — whether Bengali Shiva devotees, senior pilgrims requiring helicopter support, family groups, or first-time Himalayan yatris — Kedarnath from Kolkata offers one of the most profound and accessible Himalayan Shiva pilgrimages in India.

About Kedarnath Temple — Lord Shiva’s Himalayan Jyotirlinga

Kedarnath Temple stands at 3,583 metres above sea level in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, near the origin of the sacred Mandakini River. Surrounded by the towering Kedarnath Peak (6,940 m) and Kedar Dome Peak (6,831 m), it is considered the most dramatically located among all twelve Jyotirlingas.

The temple is accessible only through the famous 16 km mountain trek from Gaurikund or by helicopter service from Phata or Sersi helipad, making the pilgrimage both spiritually and physically transformative.

According to Hindu tradition, the temple’s origin is connected to the Pandavas, who sought Lord Shiva’s blessings after the Kurukshetra war. Lord Shiva, unwilling to forgive them immediately, disguised himself as a bull in the Kedarnath valley. When the Pandavas pursued him, Shiva disappeared into the earth — leaving behind the hump that is worshipped today as the sacred Kedarnath Shivalinga.

The original temple is believed to have been built by the Pandavas and later renovated and consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. His samadhi (final resting place) stands directly behind the temple.

πŸ”οΈ The Ancient Stone Temple

Built using massive interlocked stone slabs without mortar or cement, Kedarnath remains one of the great architectural mysteries of ancient India.

Even today, historians and engineers debate how these stones were transported and assembled at such an extreme Himalayan altitude over 1,200 years ago.

πŸ”± The Kedarnath Shivalinga

The unique conical Shivalinga at Kedarnath represents the hump of the divine bull form taken by Lord Shiva while hiding from the Pandavas.

It is considered one of the most spiritually symbolic and narratively rich Jyotirlingas in Hinduism.

⚑ Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi

Directly behind the temple lies the samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya, who attained moksha at Kedarnath after restoring the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit.

For many Bengali pilgrims connected to the Advaita Vedanta tradition, this site holds spiritual importance equal to the Kedarnath darshan itself.

🌊 The 2013 Kedarnath Floods

The catastrophic 2013 Kedarnath floods destroyed almost the entire township surrounding the temple. Yet the ancient stone temple itself remained standing.

A massive boulder diverted the floodwaters away from the temple structure — an event millions of Shiva devotees across India regard as divine protection and a miracle associated with Lord Shiva’s presence at Kedarnath.

Best Time for Kedarnath Tour From Kolkata

The Kedarnath Temple opens every year during April–May on Akshaya Tritiya and closes during October–November on Bhai Dooj. The shrine remains inaccessible during winter because of heavy snowfall at 3,583 metres altitude.

🌸 May to June — Opening Season

The most popular season for Kedarnath Yatra from Kolkata. The Akshaya Tritiya opening ceremony carries immense spiritual significance for Shiva devotees across West Bengal.

Temperatures usually range between 5–15°C with cold nights at Kedarnath base.

Helicopter seats and guesthouses fill quickly — advance booking is strongly recommended.

πŸ‚ September to October — Best Season

Post-monsoon skies remain exceptionally clear with full Himalayan visibility around Kedarnath and Kedar Dome peaks.

Crowd levels reduce significantly compared to May–June, making this the best overall season for senior pilgrims and first-time yatris.

β˜€οΈ July to August — Monsoon Season

Heavy rainfall often causes landslides and road disruptions on the Kedarnath highway and Gaurikund route.

Not recommended for first-time Kolkata pilgrims due to weather and travel safety risks.

❄️ Late October–November

The Kedarnath closing ceremony on Bhai Dooj is one of the most spiritually powerful events in the Himalayas.

The deity is ceremonially moved to Ukhimath for winter worship as the temple closes for the snow season.

Month Weather at Kedarnath Portal Status Suitability
April Cold, snow clearing Opening (late April) Early season — confirm dates

Kedarnath Trek — What Kolkata Pilgrims Need to Know

The Gaurikund to Kedarnath trek is approximately 16 km round trip and remains the most important logistical factor when planning a Kedarnath pilgrimage from Kolkata.

The route climbs from 1,982 metres at Gaurikund to 3,583 metres at Kedarnath Temple, making it one of the steepest and most spiritually significant pilgrimage treks in Uttarakhand.

Start Point Gaurikund — 1,982 metres
End Point Kedarnath Temple — 3,583 metres
Total Distance 16 km round trip (8 km each way)
Altitude Gain 1,601 metres
Average Trek Time 5–7 hours one way on foot
Difficulty Moderate to Challenging
Pony Available Yes — from Gaurikund
Palki Available Yes — from Gaurikund
Helicopter Option Available from Phata or Sersi helipad
Best Trek Time Depart Gaurikund by 4:00–5:00 AM

πŸ“ Quick Fact

The Kedarnath trek gains 1,601 metres in altitude over just 8 km — one of the steepest sustained pilgrimage climbs in Uttarakhand.

First-time trekkers from Kolkata should ideally begin a light walking routine 4–6 weeks before departure.

🧭 Traveler Tip

Book your Kedarnath helicopter seat 60–90 days in advance. Seats from Phata and Sersi helipads sell out very quickly during the May season.

Never assume last-minute helicopter availability without confirmed tickets.

πŸ“… Temple Opening Dates

Kedarnath Temple opens annually during Akshaya Tritiya and closes on Bhai Dooj.

Official dates are announced each year by the temple committee before the pilgrimage season begins.

SnazzyTrips Insights — 21 Years at Kedarnath

Over two decades of managing Kedarnath pilgrimages for devotees across India, the SnazzyTrips team has built deep on-ground experience about this Himalayan yatra that no booking portal or generic itinerary can replicate.

The single most common mistake Kolkata pilgrims make is underestimating the physical intensity of the Gaurikund–Kedarnath trek. At 3,583 metres altitude, even experienced walkers from Bengal’s flat terrain often find the climb significantly more demanding than expected.

This is why SnazzyTrips recommends spending proper acclimatisation time at Guptkashi before attempting the trek. Our itinerary includes two nights in Guptkashi instead of the rushed single-night schedule many operators follow.

Another important insight from years of Kedarnath operations: staying one night at Kedarnath base camp completely transforms the spiritual experience of the pilgrimage.

πŸŒ™ Evening Aarti Experience

After the daytime crowds descend to Gaurikund, Kedarnath becomes peaceful, silent, and deeply spiritual.

The evening aarti at the temple against the Himalayan peaks is one of the most unforgettable experiences of the entire yatra.

πŸŒ„ Pre-Dawn Temple Darshan

Pilgrims staying overnight at Kedarnath can attend the early morning puja before the main rush begins.

The first light over the Kedarnath valley creates a rare spiritual atmosphere that most day visitors never experience.

🚁 Helicopter Booking Advice

For senior Bengali pilgrims, helicopter booking should ideally be completed by January for May departures.

Demand rises every season and last-minute availability is extremely limited during peak months.

Tour Plans

Day 1
Arrival From Kolkata | Haridwar Welcome and Ganga Aarti

Depart Kolkata by morning flight or overnight train. Arrive Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport or Haridwar Railway Station. Our driver waiting with name placard. Transfer to Haridwar hotel.

Check in. Rest. Evening — the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri. For Bengali Shiva devotees arriving at Haridwar for the first time, the Ganga Aarti at dusk on the sacred river — the brass lamps floating on the Ganga current, the Vedic chanting, the marigold garlands, the cold Himalayan air coming off the river — is the precise moment the Kedarnath yatra begins emotionally before the mountains are even visible.

SnazzyTrips team briefing at hotel — complete 6-day circuit overview, altitude preparation guidance for the Kedarnath trek, Kedarnath helicopter confirmation status, puja booking confirmation, daily departure timings, what to carry and what to leave at Guptkashi before the trek. Early sleep.

πŸ›οΈ Overnight — Haridwar hotel

Day 2
Haridwar to Guptkashi | Kedarnath Circuit Base

Post-breakfast departure. Drive through Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar Garhwal, and Rudraprayag to Guptkashi — approximately 220 km, 7–8 hours.

The drive from Haridwar to Guptkashi is itself a significant Himalayan journey. Devprayag — where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet to officially become the Ganga — is visible from the road. The Alaknanda river gorge from Srinagar Garhwal to Rudraprayag deepens progressively, the road climbing through terraced Garhwal villages and pine forest. By the time Guptkashi appears on the hill above the Mandakini valley, the altitude (1,319 metres) and the temperature have changed enough that Kolkata pilgrims feel the Himalayan environment properly for the first time.

Evening — Guptkashi Vishwanath Temple. One of the oldest Shiva temples in Garhwal, where Lord Shiva is said to have hidden from the Pandavas in the form of a bull. The temple at sunset is the spiritual preparation for Kedarnath. Check in. Dinner. Early sleep — tomorrow is the acclimatisation day.

πŸ›οΈ Overnight — Guptkashi guesthouse

Day 3
Guptkashi Acclimatisation Day | Triyuginarayan Temple

This is the day that separates a SnazzyTrips Kedarnath package from most other operators. While other packages push directly to Gaurikund on Day 3, we dedicate this day entirely to acclimatisation and spiritual preparation.

Morning — light walk around Guptkashi. The town sits at 1,319 metres above sea level — enough altitude for the body to begin adjusting to lower oxygen levels before the 3,583-metre Kedarnath trek. No strenuous activity. Plenty of water. Simple food.

Afternoon — Triyuginarayan Temple, 3 km from Sonprayag (30 km from Guptkashi). This ancient temple marks the mythological site of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's wedding — the Akhand Dhuni (eternal flame) that is said to have burned since the wedding has been maintained continuously inside the temple. For Bengali Shiva devotees, Triyuginarayan is one of the most emotionally resonant stops on the entire Kedarnath circuit. Return to Guptkashi. Dinner. Very early sleep — the Gaurikund departure is pre-dawn.

πŸ›οΈ Overnight — Guptkashi guesthouse

Day 4
Gaurikund Trek | Kedarnath Darshan | Base Camp Night

3:30am wake-up. This is the earliest departure of the entire yatra — and the most important day.

Drive from Guptkashi to Gaurikund — 30 km, approximately 1 hour. The road at pre-dawn through the Mandakini valley with the peaks beginning to catch the first light above the treeline. Gaurikund at 4:30am–5:00am.

Trek begins. 8 km uphill from Gaurikund (1,982 metres) to Kedarnath (3,583 metres). The trek passes through Jungle Chatti (2 km), Bheembali (4 km), and Lincholi (6 km) before the final 2 km approach to the temple through the high-altitude meadow where the Kedarnath valley opens completely.

The moment the Kedarnath temple first becomes visible from the trail — the ancient stone structure against the Kedarnath peak and the Kedar Dome, the Mandakini emerging from the glaciers above, and the morning light on the entire Himalayan wall — is what every Bengali pilgrim who has made this trek describes as the single most powerful visual and emotional moment of their lives. It cannot be adequately communicated in advance. It has to be walked to.

Kedarnath darshan — Rudr Abhishek puja inside the temple sanctum. Adi Shankaracharya samadhi behind the temple. Time for personal prayer at the temple entrance.

Do not return to Gaurikund today. Stay the night at Kedarnath base camp. Evening aarti at the temple after the day-tripper crowds have gone down. The temple in the evening — the Himalayan silence, the cold, the peaks, the lamps — is completely different from the morning rush. Pre-dawn puja at first light tomorrow.

πŸ›οΈ Overnight — Kedarnath base camp lodge

Day 5
Pre-Dawn Puja | Kedarnath Descent | Return to Guptkashi

4:30am pre-dawn puja at Kedarnath temple. The temple before sunrise — the priests, the lamps, the Shivalinga in the first light, and virtually no other pilgrims — is the specific experience that Kolkata devotees who have done it describe most powerfully and most consistently. This is why SnazzyTrips always includes the Kedarnath overnight.

After puja — breakfast at base camp. Begin descent to Gaurikund by 7:30am–8:00am. 8 km downhill — 3–4 hours. Transfer from Gaurikund back to Guptkashi. Lunch at Guptkashi. Rest. Dinner.

The descent day is physically easier than the ascent but the knees bear the load on the downhill — take the pony if needed and do not rush. The Mandakini valley below Gaurikund on the return drive, with the Kedarnath peaks receding above, is the moment the yatra completes emotionally for most pilgrims.

πŸ›οΈ Overnight — Guptkashi guesthouse

Day 6
Guptkashi to Haridwar | Departure to Kolkata

Morning breakfast. Check out. Drive from Guptkashi to Haridwar — approximately 220 km, 7–8 hours through the Alaknanda valley, Rudraprayag, Devprayag, Rishikesh, and Haridwar.

Final Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri if arrival timing allows — the closing ceremony of the yatra on the same sacred river where it opened on Day 1. Transfer to Haridwar Railway Station or Dehradun Airport for return journey to Kolkata.

The Kedarnath departure for Kolkata pilgrims carries the specific quality of a completed Shiva pilgrimage — the Jyotirlinga darshan at 3,583 metres, the pre-dawn puja in the mountain silence, the Adi Shankaracharya samadhi, the Mandakini valley in the morning light. These are the Kedarnath memories Bengali pilgrims describe most specifically and carry home most permanently.

Transfer times: Haridwar to Dehradun Airport: 1.5 hours | Haridwar Railway Station: in-city
