The Valley of Flowers National Park remains open from June to early October. For travelers coming from Mumbai, selecting the right month can dramatically change the overall experience—from wildflower density and weather conditions to mountain visibility and crowd levels.
The most spectacular flowering season typically occurs between mid-July and mid-August, when hundreds of alpine flower species transform the valley into a vibrant carpet of purple, yellow, pink, red, and blue.
📅 Month-by-Month Guide
| Month | Weather | Flower Bloom | Suitability |
|---|---|---|---|
| June | Cool temperatures, occasional snow patches | Early bloom, limited variety | Ideal for avoiding crowds |
| July | Monsoon begins, regular rainfall | Bloom intensifies throughout month | Excellent for flower enthusiasts |
| August ⭐ | Frequent rain showers | Peak bloom and maximum diversity | Best for photographers & nature lovers |
| September | Clear skies, reduced rainfall | Fewer flowers but still scenic | Best for Himalayan views |
| October | Cold conditions, season ending | Minimal bloom | Limited departures; check availability |
🏆 Best Month for Most Travelers
If your primary goal is to witness the Valley of Flowers at its most colorful, August delivers the most dramatic floral display. The valley reaches peak bloom, creating the iconic landscapes seen in photographs and travel documentaries.
📸 Expert Tip for Mumbai Travelers
While August offers the strongest flower bloom, September provides the clearest mountain views, lower rainfall, and fewer crowds. On a clear September morning, the Bhyunder Valley delivers some of the most spectacular Himalayan photography opportunities in Uttarakhand
🎒 What to Pack for Valley of Flowers from Mumbai
Mumbai's warm coastal climate is very different from the cool alpine environment of Ghangaria and Valley of Flowers. Travelers are often surprised by the combination of mountain rain, lower temperatures, and high-altitude conditions.
July and August are monsoon months in the Himalayas. Waterproof gear is not optional—it is essential for a comfortable Valley of Flowers experience.
✅ Essential Packing Checklist
- 🥾 Waterproof Trekking Shoes
Proper trekking shoes with good grip are essential for wet mountain trails. Standard sneakers are not recommended. - 🌧️ Raincoat or Waterproof Poncho
Daily rain showers are common during the bloom season. This is one of the most important items to carry. - 🎒 Backpack Rain Cover
Protect your clothes, electronics, travel documents, and valuables from rain. - 🧥 Warm Fleece or Light Jacket
Even during August, evening temperatures in Ghangaria can drop to around 8–12°C. - 🪪 Original Government Photo ID
Required for permit verification and accommodation check-in. - 💊 Personal Medicines
Carry prescription medication, pain relief, digestive aids, and any essentials you regularly use. - ☀️ Sunscreen SPF 50+ & Sunglasses
UV exposure at Himalayan altitudes remains strong even on cloudy days. - 🔋 Power Bank
Electricity supply in Ghangaria may be limited or interrupted during peak season. - 💧 Reusable Water Bottle
Aim to carry at least 2 litres of drinking water during trekking days. - 🥾 Trekking Pole / Walking Stick
Especially useful on the steep ascent to Hemkund Sahib and during rainy trail conditions.
🎯 SnazzyTrips Packing Tip
Pack light but pack smart. A waterproof jacket, trekking shoes, and a warm mid-layer will contribute more to your comfort than carrying extra clothing. Most travelers find a 35–45 litre backpack sufficient for the entire trip.
For the Govindghat–Ghangaria trek, try to keep your backpack below 8–10 kg. A lighter pack makes the uphill trek significantly more enjoyable, especially during the monsoon season.

Tour Plans
Day 1
Mumbai Departure | Dehradun Arrival | Rishikesh Check-In
Take a morning flight from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport. Flight time is approximately 2 hours direct or 3.5 hours via Delhi.
Our driver meets you at the arrivals gate at Jolly Grant with a name placard. Transfer to Rishikesh — 18 km, approximately 45 minutes from the airport. Check in to your Rishikesh hotel.
Afternoon free to walk the ghats, explore the market, or rest before the mountains begin. Evening — Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat or Ram Jhula. Rishikesh in the early evening, with the Ganga moving cold and green between the hills and the smell of incense and marigold from the ghats, is your first proper introduction to Garhwal Uttarakhand. The journey has started.
SnazzyTrips team briefing at hotel — full 7-day circuit overview, altitude awareness guidance, what to carry for Ghangaria, what to leave at Rishikesh or Joshimath before the trek.
🛏️ Overnight — Rishikesh hotel
Day 2
Rishikesh to Joshimath | Garhwal Valley Drive
Post-breakfast departure. The Rishikesh–Joshimath drive covers approximately 250 km and takes 8–9 hours through some of the most dramatically beautiful mountain highway in India.
The route passes Devprayag — where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers meet to officially become the Ganga, visible from the bridge at the confluence, blue-green and cold against the grey rock. Then Rudraprayag, where the Mandakini joins the Alaknanda. Then Karnaprayag, where the Pindar arrives. These five prayags — sacred confluences — are the spiritual spine of Garhwal.
The valley deepens steadily. By Chamoli and then Pipalkoti, the road is climbing above the treeline. Joshimath appears at 1,875 metres — the gateway to Valley of Flowers, Badrinath, Auli, and the high Garhwal Himalayas. Check in. Dinner. Early sleep — tomorrow the trek begins.
🛏️ Overnight — Joshimath or Pipalkoti hotel
Day 3
Govindghat to Ghangaria | Trek Begins
Early morning departure from Joshimath — 21 km road drive to Govindghat, approximately 45 minutes. From Govindghat, the motorable road now ends at Pulna (3 km further, accessible by local tempo), reducing the actual walking distance to approximately 6 km from Pulna to Ghangaria.
The Pulna–Ghangaria trail follows the Pushpawati River through dense alpine forest — oak, rhododendron, birch — with waterfalls appearing frequently on either side. The trail is well-defined and not technically difficult, but it is consistently uphill with a total elevation gain of approximately 1,000 metres from Govindghat to Ghangaria at 3,050 metres.
Pony, porter, and luggage-carrying services are available from Govindghat and Pulna for those who need assistance. SnazzyTrips arranges this in advance based on your group's requirements.
Arrive Ghangaria by mid-afternoon. Check in to your guesthouse. This is the only overnight village for Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib — there is no accommodation inside the park and no road access from here forward. Rest. Light dinner. Briefing on tomorrow's Valley of Flowers trek — trail entry time, permit, what to carry, pace guidance.
🛏️ Overnight — Ghangaria guesthouse (Night 1 of 2)
Day 4
Valley of Flowers National Park Trek
Early start — the Valley of Flowers entry gate opens at first light. The trail from Ghangaria to the park entrance is approximately 1 km on flat ground, then the valley itself opens across a suspended alpine meadow for 3 km deeper into the national park.
The moment the Valley of Flowers opens fully — the meadow floor dropping below you, the flower carpet extending to the glacier walls on three sides, the Pushpawati stream running through the center, the cloud layer above the peaks — is the specific visual that every Mumbai traveler who has made this long journey describes as immediately, completely worth every hour of road, every early departure, every kilometer of uphill.
During peak bloom in July and August, the valley is simultaneously a botanical event and a landscape experience. The Blue Poppy appears in small clusters near the glacier margins. The Brahma Kamal — sacred flower of Uttarakhand — grows in dense patches. Cobra Lily, Himalayan Bellflower, Anemone, Potentilla, and dozens of other species create a color spectrum that is specific to this elevation, this monsoon system, and this twelve-week window each year.
Trek goes 4 km into the valley and returns to Ghangaria by afternoon. Total trekking time: 5–6 hours with photography stops. Park permit (approximately Rs. 150–600 per person) is managed by the SnazzyTrips team.
Back at Ghangaria — rest, dinner, early sleep.
🛏️ Overnight — Ghangaria guesthouse (Night 2 of 2)
Day 5
Hemkund Sahib Trek (Optional) | Ghangaria to Govindghat Descent
Early departure from Ghangaria at 5:00 AM for the Hemkund Sahib trek — 6 km uphill from Ghangaria to the gurudwara at 4,633 metres above sea level beside the Hemkund glacial lake.
This is the more physically demanding of the two Ghangaria treks. The altitude gain over 6 km is steep and sustained — there is no gradual warm-up. Fit travelers typically take 3–4 hours upward. The Hemkund Sahib gurudwara beside the ice-cold glacial lake — surrounded by seven Himalayan peaks with the Sikh morning prayer audible from the entrance — is one of the most powerful high-altitude spiritual experiences in India.
Travelers who prefer not to attempt Hemkund Sahib can use Day 5 as a rest day in Ghangaria, revisit sections of the Valley of Flowers, or begin the descent to Govindghat at a comfortable pace.
By afternoon — all travelers begin the descent from Ghangaria to Govindghat/Pulna. The downhill is easier on the lungs but demanding on the knees. Take the pony for the descent if needed; do not rush.
Transfer from Govindghat back to Joshimath or Pipalkoti. Dinner. Rest.
🛏️ Overnight — Joshimath or Pipalkoti hotel
Day 6
Joshimath to Rishikesh | Return Drive
Post-breakfast departure. Return drive through the Alaknanda valley — Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, Devprayag, Rishikesh — approximately 250 km, 8–9 hours.
The return drive through Garhwal often hits differently than the outward journey. The same valleys look different with Ghangaria behind you, the flowers seen and the trek complete. Devprayag from above on the way back — the precise point where the two rivers join — is the natural closing of the Garhwal circuit.
Arrive Rishikesh by evening. Check in. Optional final Ganga Aarti if arrival timing allows. Dinner.
🛏️ Overnight — Rishikesh hotel
Day 7
Rishikesh to Dehradun Airport | Departure to Mumbai
Post-breakfast check-out. Transfer from Rishikesh to Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport — 18 km, approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Board your flight to Mumbai. The Valley of Flowers journey from Mumbai — the flight, the Garhwal road, the rivers, the flower meadow at 3,500 metres, the Himalayan silence above Ghangaria — is one of those rare travel experiences that holds clearly in memory precisely because it required effort to reach. That effort is the point.
