9 Days Munsiyari Tour Package
9 Days Munsiyari Tour Package – Milam Glacier Trek
The 9 Days / 8 Nights Munsiyari Tour Package is the shortest practical itinerary that comfortably reaches the Milam Glacier and returns safely. Starting from approximately ₹34,999 per person, this expedition combines proper acclimatisation, steady trekking stages, and sufficient time to explore one of Uttarakhand's most iconic Himalayan glaciers without rushing the journey.
Unlike shorter Munsiyari trekking packages that conclude at Rilkot or Milam Village, this itinerary is specifically designed for trekkers whose primary objective is to stand at the Milam Glacier snout. Every day is planned around realistic mountain travel, allowing adequate acclimatisation before entering the higher reaches of the Johar Valley.
🏔️ Can you reach Milam Glacier in 9 days?
Yes. A well-paced 9-day itinerary is generally considered the practical minimum for reaching the Milam Glacier and returning safely. It allows time for travel to Munsiyari, acclimatisation, approximately four days of trekking through the Johar Valley to the glacier, followed by a comfortable three-day return journey to Kathgodam without compromising safety.
Introduction
This itinerary exists because of a simple reality that we explain honestly throughout our Munsiyari trekking packages. Our 7 Days Munsiyari Tour Package reaches Rilkot, while the 8 Days Munsiyari Tour Package continues to Milam Village. Neither itinerary reaches the Milam Glacier, because doing so safely requires additional trekking time and proper acclimatisation rather than an exhausting final-day push.
The Milam Glacier lies at approximately 4,250 metres in the upper Gori Ganga Valley. Beyond Milam Village, the trail continues through the stark alpine landscapes of Bilju and Ganghar, where vegetation gradually disappears and the mountains dominate the horizon. Along the approach, trekkers are rewarded with spectacular views of Hardeol, Trishuli, and the eastern face of Nanda Devi.
Although the additional distance beyond Milam Village may appear modest on a map, the combination of altitude, terrain, weather, and remoteness makes it a serious Himalayan expedition. Attempting to compress the glacier visit into a shorter itinerary significantly increases fatigue and reduces the margin for safe acclimatisation. For this reason, this package is intentionally structured around realistic daily stages rather than ambitious mileage.
If your ambition is to experience the Milam Glacier itself rather than simply reaching the historic village, this itinerary provides the first genuinely complete glacier expedition within our Munsiyari trekking range. It balances mountain safety with one of the most rewarding high-altitude journeys in Uttarakhand.
💙 SnazzyTrips Recommendation: Choose this itinerary if your dream is standing at the Milam Glacier itself. The additional trekking days are not simply about covering more distance—they provide the time needed for better acclimatisation, safer trekking, and a far more enjoyable Himalayan experience.

🏚️ Burfu & Martoli Ghost Villages

🚶 Complete Johar Valley Expedition

📋 Complete Inner Line Permit Assistance

🏕️ Professional Trekking Crew

Who This Package Is For
This is the most demanding itinerary in our Munsiyari trekking range and is intended for trekkers with genuine high-altitude experience. Ideally, participants should have successfully completed at least one Himalayan trek above 4,000 metres and be comfortable with consecutive days of strenuous walking in remote mountain terrain.
It is best suited to travellers whose primary objective is standing at the Milam Glacier snout. Those simply wishing to experience the beauty and history of the Johar Valley may find our shorter itineraries to Rilkot or Milam Village equally rewarding while involving lower physical demands.
This expedition is not recommended for first-time trekkers, travellers with cardiovascular or respiratory concerns, or anyone unwilling to accept that mountain weather and trail conditions may require itinerary adjustments at short notice. If you are uncertain about your readiness for this trek, our 8 Days Milam Village Tour Package offers an excellent introduction to the same valley with a more moderate level of difficulty.
SnazzyTrips Recommendation
We strongly recommend not choosing this as your first Himalayan trek. Although photographs of the Milam Glacier inspire many travellers, safely reaching the glacier requires much more than enthusiasm—it demands fitness, acclimatisation, and previous experience trekking at high altitude.
If you have never trekked above 4,000 metres, we recommend completing our 8 Days Milam Village Tour Package first. It provides an outstanding introduction to the Johar Valley while building the confidence and experience needed for a future glacier expedition.
🏔️ Our Recommendation: The Milam Glacier will always be there. Building experience first through the Milam Village trek often makes the glacier expedition significantly safer, more comfortable, and ultimately far more enjoyable.

How to Reach Munsiyari
Munsiyari is the starting point for the Milam Glacier expedition. While the town is accessible by road, the journey beyond Lilam is entirely on foot through the remote Johar Valley.
🚆 By Train
Kathgodam Railway Station, approximately 275 km from Munsiyari, offers excellent rail connectivity with Delhi, Lucknow, and several other major Indian cities. Tanakpur is another railhead serving an alternative Kumaon approach.
✈️ By Flight
Pantnagar Airport, around 280 km away, provides the most practical commercial flight connections via Delhi. Naini Saini Airport in Pithoragarh is closer at approximately 125 km, although flights operate only on a limited seasonal schedule.
🚘 By Road
The drive from Kathgodam to Munsiyari covers approximately 275 km and normally takes 9–10 hours. From Munsiyari, vehicles continue for roughly 25–30 km to Lilam, where the trekking route officially begins.
Beyond Lilam, the entire journey to Milam Village and the Milam Glacier is completed on foot through the Gori Ganga Valley, with porters or mules carrying expedition supplies.
🥾 Trek Note: There is no railway station, airport, or motorable road beyond Lilam. The final week of this expedition is completely self-supported on foot through the high Himalayas.
About the Milam Glacier & the Johar Valley
The Milam Glacier is one of the largest glaciers in the Kumaon Himalayas and forms the source of the Gori Ganga River, which eventually joins the Kali River. For generations, the ancient trail leading to the glacier served as an important Indo-Tibet trade route used by the Bhotia community, linking remote Himalayan settlements with markets across the border.
The approach follows the historic Johar Valley through Lilam, Bogudiyar, Rilkot, and the abandoned settlements of Burfu and Martoli, before reaching Milam Village, the last inhabited settlement in the valley. Beyond the village, the landscape transforms into rugged moraine, alpine terrain, and glacial ice.
The final approach towards the glacier, commonly passing through Bilju or Ganghar, rewards trekkers with remarkable views of Hardeol, Trishuli, and the eastern face of Nanda Devi. Few places in Kumaon offer such dramatic Himalayan scenery without undertaking a considerably longer or technically demanding mountaineering expedition.
Travellers who prefer a shorter adventure can explore the same historic valley through our other Munsiyari Tour Packages, including itineraries to Rilkot or Milam Village. This nine-day expedition is specifically designed for those whose goal is to experience the Milam Glacier itself.
🏔️ SnazzyTrips Insight: Standing beside the Milam Glacier is far more than reaching a destination—it is the culmination of a journey through centuries of Himalayan trading history, remote mountain villages, and one of the most spectacular valleys in Uttarakhand.
Best Time to Visit
The Milam Glacier Trek operates only between May and October, when the Johar Valley trail is accessible and the mandatory Inner Line Permit is issued for trekking. Outside this period, heavy snowfall blocks the route, making the glacier inaccessible for regular trekking expeditions.
| Season | Trail Conditions | Best For | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| May – June | Lower trails are generally clear, while higher sections near the glacier may still have lingering snow patches. | Experienced trekkers seeking quieter trails and spring scenery. | Excellent early-season option with proper trekking preparation. |
| July – August | Heavy monsoon rain, landslides, swollen streams, and unstable trail conditions along the Gori Ganga gorge. | Not Recommended. | We generally advise against attempting the Milam Glacier trek during the monsoon season due to safety concerns. |
| September – October | Stable weather, lower stream levels, crisp mountain views, and excellent visibility around the glacier. | Photography, Glacier Trekking & High-Altitude Expeditions. | The most reliable and highly recommended period for completing the Milam Glacier expedition. |
| November – April | Heavy snowfall completely blocks the trekking route. | Not Suitable. | The glacier expedition remains closed throughout the winter season. |
🏔️ SnazzyTrips Recommendation: For the safest trekking conditions and the clearest Himalayan views around the Milam Glacier, we strongly recommend travelling during September or October.
SnazzyTrips Insights
Based on years of operating expeditions across the Johar Valley, these practical recommendations help trekkers prepare for the realities of reaching one of Kumaon's most remote glaciers.
🏔️ Respect Your Acclimatisation Day
The acclimatisation day in Munsiyari is one of the most important parts of the expedition. Rushing or skipping it greatly increases the likelihood of altitude-related problems before reaching the glacier.
📱 Prepare for a Week Without Network
Beyond Lilam, mobile connectivity is virtually unavailable. Share your complete itinerary with family before departure, as real-time communication will not be possible for most of the trek.
💳 Carry Enough Cash
Withdraw all the cash you may need before leaving Munsiyari. There are no ATMs or reliable digital payment facilities anywhere along the Milam Glacier trekking route.
🫁 Take Altitude Seriously
At approximately 4,250 metres, altitude sickness can affect even experienced trekkers. Follow your guide's advice carefully if the pace or daily plan needs adjustment.
🧥 Pack for Sub-Zero Nights
Night temperatures near Milam Village and the glacier approach regularly fall below freezing, even during peak trekking season. Carry a sleeping bag and clothing designed for genuine sub-zero conditions.
🌦️ Weather Always Has the Final Say
Mountain weather can change rapidly near the glacier. We include realistic buffer time in this itinerary because safety always takes priority over reaching a fixed destination.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a 9 Days Munsiyari Tour Package cost?
The 9 Days Milam Glacier Trek Package starts from approximately ₹34,999 per person. The package includes an experienced trekking guide, porter or mule support, camping or rest-house accommodation, meals during the trek, and assistance with the mandatory Inner Line Permit. Final pricing may vary depending on the group size, travel season, and porter requirements.
Does this package reach the actual Milam Glacier?
Yes. This is the shortest itinerary in our Munsiyari trekking range specifically designed to reach the Milam Glacier snout. After reaching Milam Village, the trek continues via the traditional glacier approach through Bilju or Ganghar, depending on trail and weather conditions.
Is an Inner Line Permit required?
Yes. Since the route passes close to the Indo-Tibet border, an Inner Line Permit is compulsory. SnazzyTrips assists with the complete permit process through the SDM Office at Munsiyari before the expedition begins.
Which is the nearest railway station to Munsiyari?
Kathgodam Railway Station, approximately 275 km from Munsiyari, is the nearest major railway station and serves as the official pickup point for this package.
Which airport is closest to Munsiyari?
Pantnagar Airport, around 280 km away, offers regular commercial flights via Delhi. Naini Saini Airport in Pithoragarh is closer at approximately 125 km, although flight operations are limited and seasonal.
Is this trek suitable for first-time trekkers?
No. This is the most challenging itinerary in our Munsiyari trekking range and is recommended only for trekkers with previous Himalayan trekking experience above 4,000 metres. First-time trekkers are better suited to our 7 Days Rilkot Trek or 8 Days Milam Village Trek, which provide an excellent introduction to the Johar Valley with lower physical demands.
When is the Milam Glacier trek open?
The trekking season normally runs from May to October. During the winter months, heavy snowfall blocks the glacier route, making trekking impossible. The Inner Line Permit is therefore issued only during the operational trekking season.
Can beginners experience the Johar Valley without trekking to the glacier?
Yes. If your goal is to explore the spectacular landscapes of the Johar Valley without the added altitude and distance of the glacier approach, our 7 Days Munsiyari Tour Package reaches Rilkot, while the 8 Days Munsiyari Tour Package continues to Milam Village. Both are authentic Johar Valley trekking experiences and provide an excellent alternative for trekkers building experience before attempting the Milam Glacier expedition.
💡 Planning Advice: Choose the 9 Days Milam Glacier Trek only if reaching the glacier itself is your primary objective and you already have previous high-altitude trekking experience. If you're looking to discover the beauty of the Johar Valley with a lower level of difficulty, our 7-day and 8-day Munsiyari trekking packages offer safer and equally memorable Himalayan adventures.
