Kedarnath Temple stands at 3,583 metres above sea level in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district, at the sacred origin of the Mandakini River, surrounded by the towering Kedarnath Peak (6,940 m) and Kedar Dome (6,831 m).
Accessible only through the legendary 16 km mountain trek from Gaurikund or by helicopter from Phata or Sersi helipad, Kedarnath is considered the most dramatically located of all twelve Jyotirlingas in India.
For Bangalore and Karnataka Shiva devotees, Kedarnath is not merely a distant Himalayan shrine — it is regarded as the source Jyotirlinga and the principal abode of Lord Shiva.
π± The Sacred Legend of Kedarnath
According to Hindu tradition, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva’s blessings after the Kurukshetra war. Shiva, unwilling to forgive them immediately, disguised himself as a bull and hid in the Kedarnath valley.
When the Pandavas recognised him, Shiva submerged into the earth — and the hump that remained above ground became enshrined as the Kedarnath Shivalinga.
The original temple is believed to have been built by the Pandavas and later revived and consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.
For Karnataka devotees — especially followers of Lingayat, Veerashaiva, and Shaivite traditions — Kedarnath carries extraordinary spiritual significance. Pilgrims across generations describe the yatra as a life-changing experience that permanently deepens their connection with Lord Shiva.
ποΈ Ancient Stone Temple at 3,583 Metres
The Kedarnath Temple was built using massive interlocking stone slabs without mortar or cement. How these stones were transported and assembled at such extreme altitude over 1,200 years ago remains one of the great architectural mysteries of ancient India.
π± The Kedarnath Shivalinga
The unique conical Shivalinga represents the hump of Lord Shiva in bull form — making Kedarnath theologically distinct among all twelve Jyotirlingas and deeply meaningful for Shaivite devotees across Karnataka.
β‘ Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi
The samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya stands directly behind the Kedarnath Temple. The philosopher-saint attained moksha here at the age of 32, creating a profound spiritual connection between South India’s Advaita tradition and the Himalayan Shiva shrine.

The Gaurikund to Kedarnath trek is the most physically important part of the pilgrimage — climbing from 1,982 metres at Gaurikund to 3,583 metres at Kedarnath Temple.
For Bangalore and Karnataka pilgrims coming from relatively flat terrain and warm climate conditions, the high Himalayan altitude is the single most important factor in planning a safe and spiritually fulfilling yatra.
SnazzyTrips includes acclimatisation planning, trek guidance, pony/palki coordination, and helicopter support assistance for Karnataka pilgrims throughout the Kedarnath circuit.

Book your Kedarnath helicopter seat 60–90 days in advance. Phata and Sersi helipad seats fill rapidly for the May–June opening season.

The Kedarnath portal opens annually on Akshaya Tritiya and closes on Bhai Dooj. Exact dates are announced every year by the temple committee before the yatra season.
π₯Ύ Essential Trek Advice for Bangalore Pilgrims
- Start the trek before sunrise for safer weather conditions and lighter crowds
- Carry layered winter clothing even during May and June departures
- Hydrate consistently during the climb to avoid altitude fatigue
- Senior pilgrims should strongly consider pony, palki, or helicopter support
- Keep one acclimatisation halt at Guptkashi before the trek day
- Avoid overexertion during the first 3–4 km ascent

From helicopter booking and acclimatisation planning to pony arrangements and complete Garhwal coordination — SnazzyTrips helps Karnataka pilgrims complete the Kedarnath journey comfortably and safely.
Get Kedarnath Trek Assistance →SnazzyTrips Insights — 21 Years at Kedarnath
Over two decades of managing Kedarnath pilgrimages for devotees from across India, the SnazzyTrips team has developed a deep understanding of what Bangalore and Karnataka pilgrims specifically need before undertaking the Kedarnath Yatra.
The difference between a difficult trek and a spiritually fulfilling Himalayan pilgrimage often comes down to proper acclimatisation, realistic itinerary planning, and local Garhwal experience.
ποΈ The Altitude Reality
The most common challenge for Bangalore pilgrims is altitude adjustment.
Bangalore sits at 920 metres. Kedarnath stands at 3,583 metres. The 2,663-metre gain is the largest altitude adjustment most south Indian pilgrims experience on any pilgrimage in India.
This is why SnazzyTrips schedules two nights at Guptkashi instead of one — allowing proper acclimatisation before the trek and significantly improving trek success rates for Karnataka pilgrims.
β‘ Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi
For Karnataka devotees connected to the Advaita Vedanta and Smartha traditions, the samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya behind Kedarnath Temple is one of the most spiritually significant places in the Himalayas.
Most pilgrims spend only a few minutes there. Our team always advises Karnataka yatris to sit quietly for at least 20 minutes and absorb the atmosphere.
The connection between South India’s greatest philosopher-saint and the highest Jyotirlinga creates a deeply powerful spiritual experience.
π Helicopter Booking Timing
For senior Karnataka pilgrims planning May Kedarnath departures, helicopter booking timing is critical.
Every year, Bangalore families request helicopter seats in March for May departures — and every year the Phata and Sersi seats are already sold out.
The correct booking window is January. Early planning is essential for guaranteed helicopter availability during the peak yatra season.
π Pilgrimage Insight
Two-night acclimatisation at Guptkashi dramatically improves trek completion rates for Bangalore pilgrims compared to rushed one-night itineraries.
π§ Traveler Tip
For the best temple darshan atmosphere, reach Kedarnath Temple before sunrise when the Himalayan peaks are clear and the crowds remain minimal.
π Helicopter Advice
May-season helicopter seats from Phata and Sersi should ideally be booked by January for Bangalore family departures.

Day 1
Arrival From Bangalore | Dehradun to Haridwar | Ganga Aarti
Depart Bangalore by morning flight. Arrive Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport. Our driver waiting at arrivals with name placard. Transfer to Haridwar — 54 km, approximately 1.5 hours.
Check in to Haridwar hotel. Freshen up. Evening — the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
For Bangalore Shiva devotees arriving at the Ganga for the first time, the Har Ki Pauri aarti is the precise emotional beginning of the Kedarnath yatra. The sacred river flowing cold and fast from the Himalayan snowfields above, the brass oil lamps floating on the current, the Vedic chanting carrying across the water, the cold mountain air arriving from the Garhwal ranges visible above the town — this is the first moment that south Indian pilgrims register they are no longer in the Deccan Plateau.
SnazzyTrips circuit briefing at hotel — complete 6-day overview, altitude preparation guidance, helicopter confirmation status, puja booking confirmation, trek briefing for south Indian pilgrims, what to carry and what to leave at Guptkashi. Early sleep.
ποΈ Overnight — Haridwar hotel
Day 2
Haridwar to Guptkashi | Kedarnath Circuit Base
Post-breakfast departure. Drive through Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar Garhwal, and Rudraprayag to Guptkashi — approximately 220 km, 7–8 hours.
The Devprayag confluence — where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet to officially become the Ganga — is visible from the road. The Alaknanda gorge from Srinagar Garhwal to Rudraprayag deepens steadily, the road cutting through Garhwal villages and pine forest above the river. By the time Guptkashi appears at 1,319 metres, the temperature has dropped 10–12°C from Bangalore's norm and the Himalayan environment is fully established.
Evening — Guptkashi Vishwanath Temple. The ancient Shiva shrine at Guptkashi where Lord Shiva hid before appearing at Kedarnath. For Bangalore Shiva devotees, the Guptkashi Vishwanath darshan at sunset is the spiritual gateway to the Kedarnath circuit. Check in. Dinner. Early sleep.
ποΈ Overnight — Guptkashi guesthouse
Day 3
Guptkashi Acclimatisation | Triyuginarayan Temple
This day is the most important structural decision in the entire itinerary — and the one that most separates SnazzyTrips Kedarnath packages for Bangalore pilgrims from operators who push directly to Gaurikund.
Bangalore is at 920 metres. Kedarnath is at 3,583 metres. The body needs time to adjust. This is physiology, not caution.
Morning — complete rest at Guptkashi. Light walk around town. Plenty of fluids. Avoid strenuous activity. Simple food.
Afternoon — Triyuginarayan Temple, 30 km from Guptkashi. The mythological wedding site of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati — the Akhand Dhuni eternal flame inside the temple has burned continuously since the divine wedding. For Bangalore Karnataka pilgrims with deep Shiva devotion, Triyuginarayan is one of the most emotionally resonant stops on the entire Kedarnath circuit. Return to Guptkashi. Dinner. Very early sleep.
ποΈ Overnight — Guptkashi guesthouse
Day 4
Gaurikund Trek | Kedarnath Darshan | Base Camp Night
3:30am wake-up. The most important day of the entire pilgrimage.
Drive from Guptkashi to Gaurikund — 30 km, approximately 1 hour in pre-dawn darkness. The Mandakini valley at night, the peaks catching the first light above the treeline. Gaurikund at 4:30–5:00am.
Trek begins. 8 km uphill from Gaurikund (1,982 m) to Kedarnath (3,583 m). Through Jungle Chatti (2 km), Bheembali (4 km), and Lincholi (6 km) before the final 2 km approach through the high-altitude meadow where the entire Kedarnath valley opens.
The moment the Kedarnath temple first becomes visible from the trail — the ancient stone structure framed by the Kedarnath and Kedar Dome peaks, the Mandakini emerging from the glaciers above, and the morning light building on the entire Himalayan wall — is what every Bangalore Karnataka pilgrim who has made this climb describes as the most powerful visual and spiritual experience of their lives. After the long flight from Kempegowda Airport, the drive through the Garhwal valleys, the acclimatisation day at Guptkashi, and the pre-dawn trek through the Himalayan darkness — arriving at the Kedarnath temple in the morning light is the arrival that makes every preceding effort immediately and completely irrelevant.
Kedarnath darshan — Rudr Abhishek puja inside the temple sanctum. Adi Shankaracharya samadhi behind the temple — 20 minutes minimum for Karnataka pilgrims. Personal prayer at the temple entrance.
Stay the night at Kedarnath base camp. Evening aarti at the temple after the crowds descend. The temple at night — the Himalayan silence, the cold, the peaks above, the Mandakini sound below — is the Kedarnath that once experienced brings Bangalore pilgrims back.
ποΈ Overnight — Kedarnath base camp lodge
Day 5
Pre-Dawn Puja | Kedarnath Descent | Return to Guptkashi
4:30am pre-dawn puja at Kedarnath temple. The first light on the Kedarnath peak above, the priests beginning the morning rituals, the Shivalinga in the lamp glow, and virtually no other pilgrims — this is the experience that Bangalore devotees describe most specifically and most permanently after returning to Karnataka.
After puja — breakfast at base camp. Begin descent to Gaurikund by 7:30–8:00am. 8 km downhill — 3–4 hours. Transfer from Gaurikund back to Guptkashi. Lunch. Rest. Dinner.
The descent is physically easier than the ascent but the knees bear the load — take the pony if needed on the downhill and do not rush. The Kedarnath valley receding behind as the trail descends carries its own specific quality for Karnataka pilgrims — the temple growing smaller above the meadow, the peaks pulling back, the yatra completing.
ποΈ Overnight — Guptkashi guesthouse
Day 6
Guptkashi to Dehradun Airport | Departure to Bangalore
Morning breakfast. Check out. Drive from Guptkashi to Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport — approximately 250 km, 7–8 hours through the Alaknanda valley, Rudraprayag, Devprayag, Rishikesh, and Dehradun.
The Devprayag confluence on the return — the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meeting below the road — carries the same quality it had on Day 2 but seen now from the other side of the yatra. The Kedarnath Jyotirlinga darshan completed, the Adi Shankaracharya samadhi visited, the pre-dawn puja at the highest Shiva temple in India experienced. Transfer to Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport for the flight back to Bangalore.
For Karnataka Shiva devotees returning from Kedarnath, the flight south over the Himalayan foothills and across the Gangetic plain carries a weight that departure flights from other destinations do not. The yatra is complete.
Transfer time: Guptkashi to Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport — 7–8 hours (depart by 6:00am for afternoon flights)
