Sarmoli Village Munsiyari: Homestays & Travel Guide
Munsiyari’s hotels face the mountains. Sarmoli’s homes live with them.
Sarmoli is a small village on the edge of Munsiyari town, close enough to walk to from the market. What makes it different is how it welcomes visitors. Instead of resorts, families here host travellers in their own homes through a community-run homestay network. You eat what the family eats, walk the village’s own forest, and wake up to Panchachuli from a courtyard rather than a balcony.
It has become one of the best-known examples of community tourism in Uttarakhand, and for good reason. This guide covers what a Sarmoli homestay is really like, what to do in and around the village, and how to plan it from Haldwani or Kathgodam, with current road status and three itineraries built around a village stay.

What Makes Sarmoli Different
Most hill-station stays are businesses that happen to be in the mountains. Sarmoli works the other way round. It’s a farming village that decided, as a community, how it wanted to welcome visitors.

- Homes, not hotels. You stay in a room in a family house, sometimes with the family’s own kitchen garden outside your door.
- Community-run. Homestays work through a local network, so guests are spread across families and the income stays in the village. Local women’s groups, including a long-running collective, are closely involved in hosting and crafts.
- A village forest. Sarmoli manages its own forest through a van panchayat (village forest council). Guided walks through it are part of the experience, not an add-on sold by an outsider.
- Rules that protect the place. Expect simple house rules: respect quiet hours, avoid alcohol in homes, and dress modestly. They’re part of why the village still feels like a village.
What a Sarmoli Homestay Is Really Like
Set expectations right and you’ll love it.
What you get:
- a clean, simple room, often with traditional wooden or stone features
- warm bedding (heavy quilts in winter)
- home-cooked meals with the family, usually breakfast and dinner included
- hosts who can arrange local guides, walks and village visits
- in many homes, a courtyard or window with a Panchachuli view
What you don’t get:
- room service, TV or a restaurant menu
- guaranteed 24-hour hot water or uninterrupted power, especially in winter
- strong mobile signal everywhere
- privacy like a hotel, because you’re a guest in a family home
Bathrooms: many homes have attached bathrooms; some have shared or separate ones. Ask when booking if this matters to you.
Who it’s not for: travellers who want hotel-style service, or seniors who need lifts and step-free access. For them, a Munsiyari town hotel with a day visit to Sarmoli works better.
Things to Do in Sarmoli

1. Wake up to Panchachuli
On a clear morning, the peaks rise across the valley above the village rooftops. The first two hours after dawn usually have the clearest air. The warmest colour on the peaks comes late in the afternoon, towards sunset.
2. Walk to Mesar Kund through the village forest
A forest trail above the village leads to Mesar Kund, a small lake in oak and rhododendron forest. It’s an easy-to-moderate half-day walk, best done with a local guide who can explain the forest and its plants. In spring, the rhododendrons are in bloom.
3. Go birding
Sarmoli’s forests and fields are excellent for Himalayan birds. Common sightings include:
- laughingthrushes and magpies
- tits, finches and woodpeckers
- raptors over the valley
- in the higher forests, with luck and the right season, pheasants
Early morning walks with a local guide are the best way to see them. March to May is especially rich.
4. Cook and eat with the family
Help in the kitchen if your hosts welcome it. Typical meals include:
- Munsiyari rajma, the small local kidney beans this area is known for
- mandua (finger millet) roti
- bhatt ki churkani, a black soybean curry
- seasonal greens and potatoes from the family’s own fields
5. Shop local crafts
Women’s groups in the area make felt and woollen products: toys, bags, caps and other small pieces. For heavier woven shawls, pankhis and carpets, walk on to Darkot, the weaving village just below.
6. Walk on to Darkot and the museum
Sarmoli connects easily with Darkot’s home looms and the Tribal Heritage Museum in Nanasem, which tells the story of the Shauka (Bhotiya) people and the old Tibet trade route. Together, they make a full and easy village day.
7. Use it as a base for Khaliya Top
Khaliya Top, the area’s best day trek, starts at Balati, a short drive from Munsiyari. Many trekkers stay in Sarmoli and leave at dawn. Your hosts can often help arrange a guide.
8. Time your visit with the Mesar Forest Fair
Sarmoli has hosted a community forest fair, usually around late May, with local food, music, nature activities and events in the forest. Dates vary by year, so check with your hosts or us before planning around it.
Getting There from Haldwani and Kathgodam
Pickup points
| Pickup | What to know |
|---|---|
| Kathgodam Railway Station | The usual start. Overnight trains from Delhi arrive early morning, ideal for the first day’s drive. |
| Haldwani | Pickup from hotels, the bus stand or near our office. Good for overnight-bus arrivals. |
| Pantnagar Airport | About 30 km from Haldwani. Flights are limited, so check before planning around it. |
We leave by 7 AM so every hill stretch finishes in daylight.
The route
Kathgodam / Haldwani → Bhowali → Almora (overnight) → Bageshwar → Thal → Birthi Falls → Kalamuni Top → Munsiyari → Sarmoli
- About 280 km to Munsiyari, always split over two days.
- An Almora halt gives the shortest first day. Kausani or Chaukori are scenic alternatives.
- Fill fuel at Bageshwar or Thal. There’s no reliable pump after Thal.
- Withdraw cash in Haldwani, Almora or Bageshwar. Many homestays prefer cash, and ATMs in Munsiyari are limited.
- From Munsiyari market, Sarmoli is a short drive or a 20–30 minute walk.
- Luggage: some homes are a short walk from the road. Pack in a bag you can carry up a lane, and leave the big suitcase in the car if possible.
Road status (mid-October)
Last checked by the SnazzyTrips Kumaon team in mid-October. We reconfirm 48 hours before every departure.
- Kathgodam–Almora–Bageshwar–Thal: open, with normal post-monsoon conditions.
- Thal–Birthi–Kalamuni–Munsiyari: open. Expect short halts at repair sections on the single-lane stretch.
- Munsiyari–Sarmoli: open; a short village road with narrow sections.
- Mesar Kund trail: dry and in good condition through October and November.
- Winter: from late December, snow can close the Kalamuni stretch for a few days at a time. We use the lower route via Pithoragarh and Jauljibi when that happens. Village lanes can be icy in the mornings.
Three Sarmoli Itineraries
A. Homestay weekend-plus: 4 days from Haldwani
For travellers already in Kumaon or flying into Pantnagar.
- Day 1: Haldwani pickup at 7 AM → Almora (about 90 km). Afternoon in Almora’s old bazaar. Overnight in Almora.

- Day 3: Panchachuli sunrise from the courtyard. Guided walk to Mesar Kund, home lunch, then Darkot looms in the afternoon.
- Day 4: Early start back to Haldwani (a long day; reach by evening).
The 3-day Munsiyari trip can be adjusted to work like this, with a homestay instead of a hotel.

- Day 4: Early birding walk with a local guide, then a cooking session with your hosts.
- Day 5: Mesar Kund in the morning, and a free afternoon to read, walk or just watch the peaks.
- Day 6: Sarmoli → Kathgodam.

C. Friends and trekkers: 6 days with Khaliya Top
- Day 1: Kathgodam → Chaukori. Tea gardens and a long Himalayan view.
- Day 2: Chaukori → Thal → Kalamuni Top → Sarmoli.
- Day 3: Acclimatisation walk to Mesar Kund, then an evening with your host family.
- Day 4: Khaliya Top trek. Leave Sarmoli at 6:30 AM, drive to Balati, and be back for a hot dinner.

- Day 6: Chaukori → Kathgodam.
The Munsiyari friends trip package follows this active shape. On a tighter budget, the Munsiyari budget tour package keeps transport shared and stays simple.

SnazzyTrips Insights: Getting Sarmoli Right
SnazzyTrips is based in Haldwani and has planned trips across Kumaon since 2003. Sarmoli is one of the places where small details decide whether a trip feels special or awkward.
Match the guest to the home. Some homes suit couples looking for quiet; others suit families with kids who’ll love the farm animals. Matching travellers to the right host matters more than any other detail.
Arrive before dark. Village lanes have little lighting, and finding a home after sunset with luggage is no fun. That’s why we push for a 7 AM start from Haldwani and an Almora, Kausani or Chaukori halt, so you reach Sarmoli by mid-afternoon.
Pack light for the last stretch. Some homes are a short walk off the road. We suggest a soft bag for the homestay nights and leaving bigger luggage in the vehicle.
Two nights, minimum. One night means you arrive tired, sleep, and leave. Two nights give you a full day of walks, food and conversation, which is the whole point of staying in Sarmoli.
Respect is what keeps it open. We brief every traveller on house rules before arrival. Villages welcome visitors only as long as visitors respect them.
