Munsiyari Packing List: What to Carry for Your Trip
Packing for Munsiyari is not like packing for Nainital or Mussoorie.
You’re going to about 2,200 m, two days’ drive from the plains, to a town with limited ATMs, patchy mobile signal and very few shops for anything you forget. The drive over Kalamuni Top is long and winding. Mornings can be close to freezing even in October. And if you plan to walk to Khaliya Top or go in winter, the list changes again.
This guide is built from what our travellers actually need on the ground, and what they wish they’d brought. It covers:
- a core list for every season
- season-by-season extras, with real temperatures
- what to keep in your day bag on each drive day
- trek, winter, kids, seniors and photography add-ons
- where to buy anything you forgot on the way from Haldwani

Quick Answer
What should I pack for Munsiyari?
Every season:
- warm layers (a fleece and a jacket, even in summer)
- trekking or walking shoes with grip
- cash, because ATMs are limited
- a photo ID
- a power bank
- motion-sickness tablets for the hill drive
- personal medicines
- sunscreen and sunglasses
Add by season:
- Winter (December–February): thermals, a down jacket, gloves, a woollen cap, waterproof shoes
- Monsoon (July–September): a rain jacket and quick-dry clothes
- For the Khaliya Top trek: a daypack and 2 litres of water
Pack light: one soft bag plus a daypack. Hill roads and village lanes punish big suitcases.
Munsiyari Weather: What You’re Packing For
| Months | Day temperature (approx.) | Night temperature (approx.) | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| March–April | 12–18°C | 2–8°C | Cool, rhododendrons, some snow patches higher up |
| May–June | 16–22°C | 8–12°C | Pleasant days, cool nights |
| July–September | 14–20°C | 10–14°C | Monsoon rain, cloud, leeches on forest trails |
| October–November | 12–18°C | 0–6°C | Clear and crisp; cold mornings |
| December–February | 3–10°C | Below 0°C | Snow, freezing nights, icy lanes |
Munsiyari is at about 2,200 m. Khaliya Top is around 3,500 m and noticeably colder and windier than town.
The key point: there is no month in Munsiyari when you can skip a warm layer.
The Core List (Every Season)
Clothing
| Item | How many | Why |
|---|---|---|
| T-shirts or base tops | 3–4 | Layering base |
| Warm fleece or sweatshirt | 1–2 | Mornings and evenings are cool all year |
| Windproof jacket | 1 | Ridges and viewpoints are windy |
| Comfortable trousers | 2–3 | Avoid heavy jeans for walking |
| Track pants or pyjamas | 1 | Homestays and hotel evenings |
| Socks | 4–5 pairs | Feet get damp and cold quickly |
| Cap or hat | 1 | Strong mountain sun |
| Light scarf or buff | 1 | Wind and dust on the drive |
Footwear
- Walking or trekking shoes with good grip: essential. Village lanes, viewpoints and trails are uneven.
- Sandals or slippers: for hotel and homestay rooms.
- Not recommended: heels, smooth-soled sneakers, or brand-new shoes you haven’t broken in.
Documents and money
- Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, driving licence). Hotels and homestays ask for it.
- Cash. ATMs in Munsiyari are limited and can run out, and there are none in villages like Sarmoli and Darkot. Withdraw in Haldwani, Almora or Bageshwar.
- Booking confirmations, saved offline.
- Permits: none are needed for Munsiyari town or nearby sightseeing. Some high-altitude treks beyond Milam, and trips into the Darma valley, may need additional permits arranged in advance.
Health and medicines
- your regular prescription medicines, with extra days’ supply
- motion-sickness tablets, because the Thal–Kalamuni climb is winding
- paracetamol or a basic painkiller
- antacid and ORS sachets
- band-aids, an antiseptic cream and a crepe bandage
- cold and cough basics
- lip balm and moisturiser for dry mountain air
Advanced medical care is in Pithoragarh, a few hours away, so carry what you might need.
Electronics
- phone and charger
- power bank (10,000 mAh or more). Power cuts happen, especially in winter.
- offline maps, downloaded before you leave Haldwani
- a small torch or headlamp for village lanes after dark
- camera and spare batteries, if you’re shooting Panchachuli
Toiletries
- sunscreen (SPF 30+). UV is stronger at altitude.
- sunglasses
- a quick-dry towel (useful for homestays)
- wet wipes and hand sanitiser
- basic toiletries in travel sizes
Season-by-Season Additions

October–November (clear, cold mornings)
The best time to visit, and the one most people under-pack for.
- a light down jacket or heavy fleece for 6 AM sunrise views
- thermal innerwear for nights, especially from mid-November
- a woollen cap and light gloves for early mornings
- lip balm, since the air is very dry
Pack less than you think for daytime and more than you think for night. Afternoons can feel like 18°C in the sun, and dawn can be close to freezing.
December–February (snow season)
This is a different trip. Pack for snow and power cuts.
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Thermal innerwear (2 sets) | Freezing nights, with heating not always reliable |
| Down jacket plus waterproof outer layer | Snow and wind |
| Waterproof gloves plus thin liner gloves | Snow play and photography |
| Woollen cap and neck warmer | Most heat is lost from the head and neck |
| Waterproof shoes or snow boots with grip | Icy lanes; normal shoes slip |
| Woollen socks (5–6 pairs) | Wet feet get dangerously cold |
| Gaiters and microspikes | For snow walks to Betuli Dhar or Khaliya |
| Hot water bottle or flask | Cosy nights and warm drinks on the go |
| Extra power bank | Snow can cause long power cuts |
| Sunglasses (UV) | Snow glare |
Our winter Munsiyari snow package includes a buffer day and hotels with heating. For other snow trips across the state, see our Uttarakhand snowfall and winter packages.
March–June (spring and summer)
- a light fleece or jacket for evenings
- a sun hat and good sunscreen
- a light rain jacket (spring showers happen)
- breathable clothes for daytime walks
- a reusable water bottle
March and early April can still be cold at night, so pack closer to the October list. The summer Munsiyari package is timed for this season.
July–September (monsoon)
Not the best time for views, but if you go:
- a proper rain jacket, plus rain pants if you plan to walk
- quick-dry clothes; cotton stays wet for days
- waterproof shoes or sandals with grip
- a rain cover for your daypack, and plastic or dry bags for electronics
- salt or leech socks for forest trails
- extra socks
- a compact umbrella
Also budget a buffer day for landslide delays on the road. The monsoon Munsiyari package is planned with flexible days.
Day-Bag Plan: What to Keep Handy on Each Drive Day

Most packing lists skip this, but it matters most. The drive from Haldwani or Kathgodam to Munsiyari takes two days, and your main bag will be on the roof or in the boot.
Day 1: Kathgodam or Haldwani → Kausani, Chaukori or Almora
Keep in your day bag:
- motion-sickness tablet (take it 30 minutes before the hill climb from Kathgodam)
- water, snacks, wet wipes
- a light jacket (it cools quickly after Bhowali)
- your phone, charger and power bank
- cash: withdraw in Haldwani before you leave
- sunglasses
Day 2: halt town → Bageshwar → Thal → Kalamuni → Munsiyari
This is the longer and harder day.
- motion-sickness tablet again before Thal; the single-lane climb starts there
- a warm layer within reach. Kalamuni Top is at about 2,700 m and noticeably colder.
- camera or phone ready for Birthi Falls and the first Panchachuli view at Kalamuni
- snacks; food options thin out after Thal
- last cash stop: Bageshwar
Sightseeing days in Munsiyari
- fleece and windproof jacket
- water bottle and snacks
- sunscreen, sunglasses, cap
- cash for Darkot woollens or homestay lunches
- a small torch if you’ll be out after sunset

Road status (mid-October)
Last checked by the SnazzyTrips Kumaon team in mid-October. We reconfirm 48 hours before every departure.
- Kathgodam–Almora–Bageshwar–Thal: open, normal post-monsoon conditions.
- Thal–Birthi–Kalamuni–Munsiyari: open, with short halts at repair sections on the single-lane stretch. Keep motion-sickness tablets handy.
- Weather outlook: clear and dry through October and November. Expect cold mornings from mid-November.
- Winter: from late December, snow can close the Kalamuni stretch for a few days at a time. When it does, we use the lower route via Pithoragarh and Jauljibi. Pack for a possible extra day.
Three Itineraries with Packing Notes
A. October Munsiyari: 5 days from Kathgodam
- Day 1: Kathgodam → Almora → Kausani. Day bag: light jacket, motion-sickness tablet, cash.
- Day 2: Kausani → Bageshwar → Thal → Kalamuni → Munsiyari. Warm layer within reach for Kalamuni.
- Day 3: Panchachuli sunrise (down jacket and cap at 6 AM), then the museum, Sarmoli and Darkot. Cash for woollens.
- Day 4: Betuli Dhar and Nanda Devi Temple at sunset. Windproof jacket.
- Day 5: Munsiyari → Kathgodam.
Packing focus: layers for cold mornings and warm afternoons. The 4 nights / 5 days Munsiyari tour follows this shape.
B. January snow trip: 6 days with a buffer day
- Day 1: Kathgodam → Almora, a short winter day. Thermals on from the start.
- Day 2: Almora → Bageshwar → Munsiyari (or via Jauljibi if Kalamuni is closed). Full winter kit in the car, not on the roof.
- Day 3: Snow walk to Betuli Dhar. Gaiters and waterproof gloves.
- Day 4: Guided snow walk towards Khaliya meadow if conditions allow. Microspikes.
- Day 5: Buffer day. Flask, extra power bank and books.
- Day 6: Munsiyari → Kathgodam with an early start.

Add-On Lists
For the Khaliya Top trek
- 20–25 litre daypack with a rain cover
- 2 litres of water per person (no reliable source on the upper trail)
- packed lunch and energy snacks
- trekking pole
- windproof jacket, cap and gloves
- sunscreen and sunglasses
- small first-aid kit
- in winter: gaiters, microspikes and waterproof shoes
For kids
- extra sets of warm clothes (they get wet and muddy)
- favourite snacks; food choices are limited
- children’s medicines and motion-sickness remedies
- a small toy or book for the long drives
- gloves and a cap, since they’ll lose one
For seniors
- all regular medicines plus spares, and a written list of them

- lots of single-use plastic
- expensive jewellery
- more clothes than you need. Layers beat volume.
SnazzyTrips Insights: Packing Lessons from the Kumaon Road
SnazzyTrips is based in Haldwani and has run trips into Kumaon since 2003. Every season, the same few packing mistakes show up, and they’re all easy to avoid.
“It’s October, I’ll be fine in a sweatshirt.” This is the most common one. Munsiyari afternoons in October feel mild, but the 6 AM Panchachuli sunrise can be near freezing. We now remind every October traveller to pack a proper down or heavy jacket.
Cash runs out before shoes do. Travellers fall in love with a Darkot pankhi and then find the Munsiyari ATM empty. We tell everyone to withdraw in Haldwani or Bageshwar and treat Munsiyari’s ATM as a backup, not a plan.
The suitcase problem. Large hard suitcases are a struggle on hotel stairs and village lanes, especially for homestays. Soft bags and a daypack make every check-in easier.
Motion sickness hits on day two, not day one. The Kathgodam–Almora road is fine for most people. The single-lane climb after Thal is where travellers get sick. We stop at Thal and suggest taking a tablet there.
Winter kit belongs inside the car. In snow season, gear on the roof carrier is useless when the car stops at Kalamuni and you step out into wind and snow. We pack winter layers inside the cabin.
This practical, on-the-road knowledge is why we work with 150+ verified local partners across 50+ destinations and have planned trips for more than 20,000 families.
