15 Best Things to Do in Munsiyari, Uttarakhand

Image

Most people reach Munsiyari tired. The drive from Kathgodam takes the better part of a day, and the last stretch over Kalamuni is all switchbacks. Then the clouds lift, and five snow peaks fill the whole sky in front of the hotel balcony. That’s Panchachuli, and it’s the reason the drive is worth it.

But Munsiyari is more than one view. It’s a base for one of Kumaon’s best day treks, a cluster of Bhotiya villages with their own weaving traditions, and the starting point for glacier routes that very few tourists ever attempt. This guide covers the 15 things that actually deserve your time, in a sensible order, with honest notes on what each one involves. If you’re still choosing how to travel, our Munsiyari tour packages page compares every route and duration in one place.

Quick Answer

What are the best things to do in Munsiyari? The top experiences are:

  • watching sunrise over the Panchachuli Peaks
  • trekking to Khaliya Top (about 3,500 m)
  • walking to Thamri Kund
  • stopping at Birthi Falls on the drive in
  • crossing Kalamuni Top
  • visiting the Tribal Heritage Museum and Nanda Devi Temple
  • staying in a Sarmoli homestay
  • buying handwoven wool in Darkot
  • seeing snow between late December and February

Plan at least two nights in Munsiyari so you get two sunrise chances. The best months are October–November for clear views and March–June for trekking.

Munsiyari at a Glance

Detail Information
Location Pithoragarh district, Kumaon, Uttarakhand
Altitude About 2,200 m
Known for Panchachuli views, Khaliya Top, glacier treks
Nearest railhead Kathgodam (about 280 km by road)
Ideal stay 2–3 nights in Munsiyari
Best months March–June, October–November
Snow season Late December to February

1. Watch Sunrise Over the Panchachuli Peaks

This is the one thing you cannot skip. The five Panchachuli summits, the highest above 6,900 m, sit directly across the Gori Ganga valley from town. Between roughly 6:00 and 7:30 AM, the first light turns them pink, then gold, then white. By late morning, clouds usually build and the peaks can disappear for the rest of the day.

Here’s the practical problem: one morning is a gamble. Mist, haze or a single cloud bank can wipe out your only chance. That’s why a 6-day Munsiyari itinerary with two full nights in town works so much better than a rushed one-night stop. Two mornings roughly doubles your odds.

Ask for a Panchachuli-facing room when you book. Many hotels have them, but not all rooms in those hotels face the right way.

2. Trek to Khaliya Top

Khaliya Top is the best day hike in this part of Kumaon.

  • Start point: Balati, about 8 km from Munsiyari.
  • Trail: roughly 6–7 km through oak and rhododendron forest, opening onto wide alpine meadows near 3,500 m.
  • Views: on a clear day, a 360° panorama of Panchachuli, Nanda Devi, Rajrambha and Hardeol.
  • Time: most fit beginners manage it in 5–7 hours round trip.

Start by 7 AM; the summit clouds over by noon more often than not. A local guide is worth it, especially in spring when snow lingers on the upper trail.

If the trek is the main reason for your trip, look at a dedicated Khaliya Top Munsiyari trek package rather than squeezing it into a sightseeing tour. Travellers coming from the capital can book the Khaliya Top trek from Delhi. There’s also a separate Khaliya Top trek option from Mumbai built around flight or train connections.

3. Walk to Thamri Kund

If Khaliya feels like too much, Thamri Kund is the easier alternative. It’s a short forest walk to a small high-altitude pond surrounded by oak and pine, at about 2,400 m. The trail is quiet, well shaded and good for birding.

It also makes a good warm-up the day before Khaliya Top. Walking at altitude on day one helps your body adjust before the bigger climb. Our Munsiyari trekking tour package pairs exactly these two hikes.

4. Stop at Birthi Falls

Birthi Falls sits right beside the road on the Bageshwar–Thal–Munsiyari route, about an hour before you reach town. The water drops roughly 125 metres down a rock face, and after the monsoon it’s at full force.

Most drivers treat it as a photo stop. Take 30–40 minutes instead. There’s a small tea shop, and you can walk closer to the base. After six hours in a car, your legs will thank you. A standard 4 nights / 5 days Munsiyari tour builds this in as a proper break rather than a drive-by.

5. Cross Kalamuni Top

Kalamuni Top, at around 2,700 m, is the highest point on the road into Munsiyari and your first real look at Panchachuli. There’s a small Kalamuni temple at the pass. On a clear afternoon, the view stretches across the entire range.

In winter, Kalamuni is also where snow closes the road first. If that happens, drivers switch to the lower valley route via Pithoragarh and Jauljibi. It’s longer, but it keeps the trip moving.

6. Visit the Nanda Devi Temple

Nanda Devi is the guardian goddess of Kumaon, and the temple near Munsiyari sits on a ridge with open views of the snow peaks. It’s a short drive and a short walk, best done in the late afternoon when the light softens.

If temples are part of what draws you to the hills, the ancient stone shrines of Jageshwar Dham fit neatly into a Munsiyari road trip via Almora.

7. Spend an Hour at the Tribal Heritage Museum

This is the most underrated stop in Munsiyari. The small, privately run museum in Nanasem documents the life of the Shauka (Bhotiya) community. Exhibits cover their trade routes into Tibet, clothing, tools, documents, and photographs from the days when the Johar valley was a busy trading corridor.

It takes 30–45 minutes and gives context to everything else you see. After visiting, the old stone houses and the glacier routes beyond town make a lot more sense.

8. Stay a Night in a Sarmoli Homestay

Sarmoli village, a short walk from town, runs one of the best community homestay programmes in Uttarakhand. You stay with a local family and eat home-cooked Kumaoni food, and the money stays in the village. Local women’s collectives also sell handmade woollens and felt crafts here.

It suits slow travellers well. If you’re travelling alone, a Munsiyari solo trip package can include a homestay night. For more places like this across the state, browse our offbeat Uttarakhand tour packages.

9. Buy Handwoven Wool in Darkot

Darkot is a weaving village just below Munsiyari, known for shawls, pankhis (thick wool wraps) and carpets made on traditional looms. Walk through, and you’ll often see weavers working on house verandas.

Prices are fair, the quality is genuine, and you’re buying directly from the people who made it. It’s one of the more personal souvenirs you’ll find anywhere in Kumaon.

10. Visit Maheshwari Kund

Maheshwari Kund is a small pond close to town, tied to a local legend about a sage and the village it once cursed. It’s not dramatic, but it’s peaceful, with good Panchachuli views from the surrounding meadow.

It works best as part of a relaxed local sightseeing half-day along with the museum and Nanda Devi Temple.

11. Catch Sunset from Betuli Dhar

Betuli Dhar is a ridge viewpoint a short drive from town, popular with locals for evening walks. Sunrise belongs to Panchachuli, but sunset here is excellent too, with the light falling across the whole valley.

In winter, Betuli Dhar is also one of the most reliable spots near Munsiyari to find snow.

12. Soak in the Madkot Hot Springs

Madkot, about 22 km from Munsiyari on the Jauljibi road, has natural sulphur hot springs that locals have used for generations. The facilities are basic, but on a cold day, a warm soak after a trek is welcome.

It fits naturally if you’re entering or leaving by the Pithoragarh–Jauljibi route, which is the default in deep winter.

13. See Snow in Winter

Munsiyari is one of Kumaon’s more reliable snow destinations. Snow usually arrives in late December and peaks in January. Town, Kalamuni Top, Khaliya Top, Betuli Dhar and Thamri Kund all turn white.

Winter needs proper planning:

  • a high-clearance SUV
  • a hotel with heating
  • a buffer day in case Kalamuni closes
  • a driver who knows the alternate route

A winter Munsiyari snow tour package handles all of that. A New Year Munsiyari tour package is popular with families who want a quiet celebration away from crowded hill stations.

For other snow options across the state, see our Uttarakhand snowfall and winter tour packages. If skiing matters more than quiet, Auli on the Garhwal side is the better fit.

14. Start a Glacier Trek (Milam, Ralam or Namik)

For serious trekkers, Munsiyari is the gateway, not the destination.

  • Milam Glacier (8–10 days): follows the old Johar trade route past abandoned stone villages.
  • Ralam Glacier (9–11 days): wilder and far less trekked.
  • Namik Glacier (6–7 days): leads to the source region of the Ramganga.

These need permits, guides, porters and real fitness. Our Munsiyari adventure tour package includes Khaliya Top plus a taste of the Milam route. The full range of multi-day options sits under Uttarakhand trekking and hiking tour packages.

One correction worth knowing: Panchachuli Base Camp is not trekked from Munsiyari. It starts from Duktu in the Darma valley, reached via Dharchula. The same region leads to Adi Kailash and Om Parvat, which can be planned as a separate high-altitude yatra.

15. Do Nothing: Stargaze, Birdwatch, Slow Down

Munsiyari has almost no light pollution, so on clear nights the Milky Way is visible from most hotel terraces. Mornings bring Himalayan birds along the forest trails, such as magpies and laughingthrushes, with monals higher up.

This is why Munsiyari works so well for couples. A Munsiyari honeymoon package is built around view rooms and unhurried evenings. The Munsiyari couple tour package adds a little more sightseeing. More romantic options across the state are listed under Uttarakhand honeymoon packages.

SnazzyTrips Insights: What Local Experience Teaches You About Munsiyari

SnazzyTrips isn’t a booking desk in a metro city. Our team works out of Haldwani, at the foot of the Kumaon hills, and has been planning trips across this region since 2003. Munsiyari is home ground for us, not a destination we picked from a catalogue. That changes how we plan it.

Here’s what years of running this route have taught us:

One night is never enough. Travellers who book a single night in Munsiyari almost always ask for a second one the moment they arrive. The drive takes a full day each way. One night gives you one sunrise gamble, no rest, and no time for Khaliya or the villages. Two nights is the minimum that makes the journey worth it, and three is better.

The driver matters more than the hotel. The Birthi–Kalamuni–Munsiyari stretch has narrow single-lane sections, steep gradients and blind curves. We use drivers who run this road regularly. They know where to stop for the best views and where to slow down. They also know when the weather means it’s time to turn back.

Road conditions change by the day. Because we’re based in Kumaon, our team checks conditions on the Kalamuni and Jauljibi routes with local contacts before every departure. In winter, the alternate valley route is planned in advance, not figured out on the spot.

“Mountain view” doesn’t always mean Panchachuli view. Some rooms marketed as mountain-facing look at the wrong ridge. We recommend properties where Panchachuli-facing rooms have been verified, because that view is the whole point of the trip.

Pacing beats packing. Itineraries that cram Nainital, Kausani and Munsiyari into four days look good on paper and feel exhausting in practice. We’d rather drop a stop and give you time at the one that took the longest to reach.

This on-ground knowledge is why we cover 50+ destinations through 150+ verified local partners, and why more than 20,000 families have travelled with us. You can learn more about our Haldwani-based team and how we work.

How Many Days Do You Need for All 15?

Realistically, you won’t do all 15 on one trip, and you shouldn’t try. Here’s how duration maps to experience:

Trip length What fits Package
2 days One sunrise, local sightseeing (ex-Haldwani/Kathgodam area) 2 days Munsiyari tour package
2 days Short viewpoint-focused trip Kailash View Point tour, Munsiyari
3 days Two sunrises, museum, villages 3 days Munsiyari itinerary
4 days Adds Thamri Kund or Birthi Falls properly 4 days Munsiyari tour
7 days Khaliya Top plus a Kausani or Almora halt 7 days Munsiyari tour package
8 days Unhurried pace with buffer days 8-day Munsiyari holiday
9 days Munsiyari plus a wider Kumaon loop 9 days Munsiyari tour

Short trips assume you’re already close to Kumaon. From a metro city, plan for at least 6 days door to door.

Which Munsiyari Trip Fits Your Group?

Families with kids: Skip Khaliya. Do Thamri Kund, the museum, Birthi Falls and a Sarmoli lunch instead. The Munsiyari family tour package adds an extra overnight halt to keep driving days short. See our wider Uttarakhand family holiday packages too.

Senior citizens: Ask for ground-floor rooms, since many Munsiyari hotels are built down hillsides with lots of stairs. The Munsiyari senior citizen tour package keeps sightseeing short and the vehicle private.

Friends and groups: A tempo traveller works for 8–12 people.

Comfort-first travellers: Munsiyari has no branded five-star resort, so “luxury” here means the best view rooms, a private SUV and better pacing. That’s what the Munsiyari luxury tour package delivers. Other premium trips are under Uttarakhand luxury tour packages.

Tight budget: The Munsiyari budget tour package uses standard hotels and shared sightseeing. Most of the 15 experiences above are free anyway.

Adventure seekers: Start with Uttarakhand adventure tour packages if you want to compare Munsiyari with other active trips.

Best Time for Each Experience

  • October–November: Sharpest Panchachuli views of the year, best photography and comfortable trekking. The best all-round season.
  • March–June: Rhododendrons in bloom, pleasant days, and ideal conditions for Khaliya Top. The summer Munsiyari tour package is timed for this window.
  • July–September: Green valleys and full waterfalls, but cloud cover and landslide delays are real. If you go, take the monsoon Munsiyari tour package with flexible days, or compare Uttarakhand monsoon tour packages.
  • December–February: Snow, sub-zero nights and occasional road closures. Beautiful, but only with proper planning.

Combining Munsiyari with the Rest of Kumaon

Munsiyari is far, so it makes sense to break the journey with a stop or two.

For the full circuit, the 10-day Munsiyari, Kausani, Binsar and Nainital tour covers almost everything in this guide at a comfortable pace.

Getting to Munsiyari from Your City

Every route ends with the same drive: Kathgodam → Almora or Kausani (overnight) → Bageshwar → Birthi → Kalamuni → Munsiyari. What changes is how you reach Kathgodam.

North India (road or overnight train):

West and Central India (usually flight or train via Delhi):

South and East India (flight to Delhi or Pantnagar, then road):

Mumbai travellers can compare Munsiyari-based honeymoon, family and winter trips on our Uttarakhand tour packages from Mumbai page. Delhi-based travellers can see every other destination on Uttarakhand tour packages from Delhi.

From the ground: Don’t try Delhi to Munsiyari in one day. It’s roughly 560 km of mostly hill road. Every trip we plan breaks it with an overnight halt in Almora or Kausani. In winter, we keep the Jauljibi route ready in case Kalamuni shuts.

FAQs: Things to Do in Munsiyari

What is Munsiyari famous for?
Munsiyari is famous for its close, unobstructed view of the Panchachuli Peaks and the Khaliya Top day trek. It is also known for Bhotiya villages like Sarmoli and Darkot, and as the starting point for the Milam, Ralam and Namik glacier treks.

How many days are enough for Munsiyari?
Spend at least two nights in Munsiyari itself. From Delhi or another metro, that means a 6–7 day trip overall, including overnight halts on the way in and out.

Is Khaliya Top trek difficult?
It’s easy to moderate. Fit beginners can do it in 5–7 hours round trip from Balati. Start early, carry water and layers, and take a local guide in spring or winter, when snow covers the upper trail.

Can you see snow in Munsiyari?
Yes. Snow usually falls from late December to February, with January the heaviest month. Kalamuni Top, Khaliya Top and Betuli Dhar are the best snow spots.

Is Panchachuli Base Camp trekked from Munsiyari?
No. Panchachuli Base Camp starts from Duktu in the Darma valley, reached via Dharchula. Munsiyari only offers the view of Panchachuli from the west.

What is the best month to visit Munsiyari?
October and November give the clearest mountain views. March to June is best for trekking and rhododendron season.

Is Munsiyari safe for senior citizens?
Yes, with the right planning: a private SUV, an overnight halt to split the drive, and a ground-floor room, since many hotels sit on steep slopes.

Do I need a permit to visit Munsiyari?
No permit is needed for Munsiyari town and its local sightseeing. Some high-altitude treks beyond Milam may need additional permissions, which should be arranged before you start.

Why book Munsiyari with a local Uttarakhand operator?
Munsiyari depends on road conditions, driver experience and the right hotel rooms. A Kumaon-based operator can check routes before departure, switch to the alternate Jauljibi road when Kalamuni closes, and recommend verified Panchachuli-facing stays.

Plan Munsiyari Properly

Munsiyari rewards travellers who slow down. Give it two or three nights, time your visit around the season, and leave space for a morning when the clouds don’t cooperate.
